Tzu wrote: "Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory.
Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat."
With fighting in Afghanistan now entering its
seventh year, no agreed international strategy, public support on both
sides of the Atlantic crumbling, Nato in disarray and widening
insecurity in Afghanistan, defeat is now a real possibility. The
consequences for both Afghanistan and its allies would be appalling:
global terrorism would have won back its old haven and created a new one
over the border in a mortally weakened Pakistan; our domestic security
threat would be gravely increased and a new instability would be added
to the world's most unstable region...more...

Hamid Karzai at the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly
Mr President, Excellencies, Ladies and gentlemen,
Over the 62 years of its existence, this assembly
has witnessed many moments of historical reckoning. It was one such
moment, five years ago, when Afghanistan returned to this assembly as a
country emerging out of a long, dark era of war, violence and terror. As
I stood before this assembly in September 2002, the challenges of
restoring security to the lives of the Afghan people, and rebuilding
Afghanistan into a stable and democratic country, seemed all but
insuperable. The fate of a nation swayed between the promise of a safer,
more prosperous future on the one hand, and the enormity of the tasks at
hand on the other.

In rund zwei Wochen wird in Afghanistan das neue Jahr und damit der
Beginn des Frühlings gefeiert. Traditionell reisen viele Menschen in den
Norden des Landes. Das so genannte "Rote Tulpen-Fest" in dieser Region
ist landesweit bekannt und beliebt. Im letzten Jahr kam bis zu eine
Million Menschen in die geschichtsträchtige Stadt Mazar-e Scharif, wo
die Tulpen am besten gedeihen.
Doch ginge es nach den Wünschen der Taliban, soll im neuen Jahr vor
allem der Terror zum...

Deutschland ist der grösste Truppensteller im Rahmen des ISAF-Engagements
der NATO in Afghanistan. Über 2000 Soldaten sind in Afghanistan eingesetzt.
Ab Sommer wird der grösste Teil von ihnen im neuen Regionalkommando Nord in
Mazar-e Sharif eingesetzt werden, die übrigen in zwei so genannten PRTs und
in Kabul.
